Taita Hills

The Taita Hills forests rise as islands of forest above the dry plains of south-eastern Kenya, home to species found nowhere else. A separate place, the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, shares the name.

Why visit Taita Hills

Forest islands in the sky.

High on a series of ancient hills above the dryland plain of south-eastern Kenya, the Taita Hills forests survive as separate fragments, forest islands that form the northern end of the Eastern Arc Mountains. Nature Kenya describes them as a Key Biodiversity Area and an Alliance for Zero Extinction site, with levels of endemism among the highest anywhere, and some species live here and nowhere else on earth.

Among them are the Taita apalis, the Taita thrush, the Taita Hills warty frog, the Taita Hills purple-glossed snake, the Taita Hills caecilian and the Taita dwarf shrew. Other threatened species include the Taita white-eye, the limbless Sagalla caecilian, which lives in the soil and leaf litter, the Taita Mountain dwarf galago, a small nocturnal primate, and the Taita blade-horned chameleon.

Landscapes & wildlife

Fragile and irreplaceable.

The forests include Ngangao, Iyale, Susu, Mbololo and Fururu, managed by the Kenya Forest Service, while Chawia and Vuria are managed by the county government of Taita Taveta. They face serious threats from fires, many set to clear land, from farming, grazing and fragmentation driven by a growing population, from climate change and from an invasive parasitic dodder vine. National and county government, local groups and Nature Kenya are working to protect and restore them.
