Your itinerary, day by day.
Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi
The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

01Day 01Maasai Mara
The Mara first
Nairobi → Maasai Mara
This safari puts the Maasai Mara first, reached from Nairobi by 4×4 Land Cruiser on a drive that takes much of the morning. An afternoon game drive is a first chance to take in the reserve, where the Mara Conservancy describes the plains in the quieter months as red oat grass, elephants, giraffes and lions resting through the heat, and in migration season as a landscape in motion.

02Day 02Maasai Mara
A Mara day without hurry
Maasai Mara
The second day is given entirely to the reserve. If the herds are in, the drives may follow them towards the Mara River, where watching from a respectful distance is part of the reserve’s rules; if not, the reserve’s own wildlife, from lion prides to topi on their termite mounds, fills the day. Either way the Mara rewards patience, and a full day means that a good sighting never has to be cut short to keep to a schedule.

03Day 03Maasai Mara · Lake Naivasha
Grassland to fresh water
Maasai Mara → Lake Naivasha
Leaving the Mara, the journey heads north-east to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley. Its papyrus fringes and the grassland along the shore, grazed by hippos, are the two ecosystems the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute singles out as internationally important. Arriving in the afternoon, there is time to enjoy the lake’s calm after the excitement of the Mara.

04Day 04Lake Naivasha · Lake Nakuru
Naivasha to Nakuru
Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru
The morning at Naivasha is a chance to see the lake properly, its shoreline grassland and its birds, before the short drive along the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. Nakuru has a long conservation history: first protected for its birds in 1961, it became Kenya’s first government-managed rhino sanctuary in 1987, and its electric fence was a landmark in Kenyan conservation. Where time allows, an afternoon drive here looks for rhinos among the woodland and escarpments.

05Day 05Lake Nakuru · Amboseli
The long road south to Amboseli
Lake Nakuru → Amboseli
Today is mostly a travelling day, from the Rift Valley to Amboseli in the far south of Kenya. A short early drive at Lake Nakuru comes before departure where time allows. The road then crosses the highlands and drops to the dry plains near the border with Tanzania, entering Amboseli through one of the gates Kenya Wildlife Service lists from the Nairobi side.

06Day 06Amboseli
Amboseli’s great herds
Amboseli
A full day in Amboseli is spent with the elephants that have made the park famous. Kenya Wildlife Service describes large herds, and the park’s open plains, swamps and marshes make them easy to watch as families move to water and feed. There is more to see: waterbirds in the swamps, birds of prey overhead and, on Observation Hill, a view across the whole park. On clear days, Kilimanjaro fills the southern skyline.

07Day 07Amboseli
Amboseli to Nairobi
Amboseli → Nairobi
A last game drive in the morning, if time allows, gives one more chance to see the elephants against the mountain before the drive back to Nairobi. Seven days have taken in the grassland of the Mara, two Rift Valley lakes with very different characters, and the plains of the south. The safari ends in the city, and the photographs of elephants beneath Kilimanjaro will be hard to beat.
