Day by day
Your itinerary, day by day.
Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi
The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

01Day 01Maasai Mara
A morning departure for the Mara
Nairobi → Maasai Mara
A week of travel begins with the drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara in the 4×4 Land Cruiser, where a lodge is the base for the first two nights. Where arrival time allows, an afternoon game drive gives a first look at the reserve, and with everything new, even the commonest animals are worth stopping for. Expect long views across the grassland, the outlines of acacias and, with luck, a first pride of lions.

02Day 02Maasai Mara
A full Mara day
Maasai Mara
The second day is spent entirely in the reserve, which gives time to explore areas beyond the first afternoon’s range. Along the Siria Escarpment the Mara Conservancy employs community scouts to manage the reserve’s border, part of the work that keeps the Mara Triangle protected. In the migration months, the Conservancy’s advice is to treat the herds themselves as the spectacle rather than chasing crossings, and that applies to any day here: the best sightings often come from waiting.

03Day 03Maasai Mara · Lake Nakuru
Mara to Nakuru
Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru
Leaving the reserve, the Land Cruiser heads for Lake Nakuru, which Kenya Wildlife Service places north-west of Nairobi on the main A104 road. The night is at Buraha Zenoni, the property our catalogue names for this stop. Nakuru’s semi-alkaline lake is the centre of the park, but the grassland, acacia woodland and rocky escarpments around it are just as important for its wildlife, and a short afternoon drive may give a first taste of all of them.
Two lakes, two very different kinds of wildlife. In the morning, the drive in Lake Nakuru National Park looks for the black and white rhinos that the park has protected since 1987. In the afternoon, at Lake Naivasha, the stars are the hippos that graze the lakeside grassland, often well out of the water, so keep a safe distance on the shore. Any activity on the lake that afternoon is agreed in your quotation.

05Day 05Lake Naivasha · Amboseli
South to Amboseli
Lake Naivasha → Amboseli
From Lake Naivasha the safari heads south to Amboseli, a long drive that crosses from the Rift Valley to the plains below Kilimanjaro. The landscape grows drier as the road heads south, and in the park itself it is the swamps and marshes that draw the elephants. Kenya Wildlife Service lists Iremito and Meshanani as the main gates from the Nairobi side.

06Day 06Amboseli
Elephants in the swamps
Amboseli
A whole day in Amboseli lets you see the elephants at their most natural, moving in family groups to drink and feed in the swamps and then back across the plains. Kenya Wildlife Service describes the park as a mix of open grass plains, acacia woodland, thorny bushland, swamps and marshes, and each of those habitats has its own wildlife. Observation Hill, also called Nomatior, is a good place to understand how they fit together.

07Day 07Amboseli
Leaving the plains for Nairobi
Amboseli → Nairobi
On the final morning there is a chance for a last drive in Amboseli before the road back to Nairobi. If the weather is kind, Kilimanjaro may be clear across the border, the image many people carry home from this park. The safari ends in the capital after seven days, two of them in the Mara, one at each of the Rift Valley lakes and two among the elephants of the south.
