Day by day

Your itinerary, day by day.

Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi

The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

    Day 01Amboseli

    South-east to Amboseli

    Nairobi → Amboseli

Kenya Wildlife Service lists two main road approaches from Nairobi: via Emali on the Nairobi–Mombasa road to Iremito Gate, or via Namanga to Meshanani Gate. Either way, the 4×4 Land Cruiser leaves the city behind for open, drier country until the park appears, a broad basin of grass plains, swamps and acacia woodland. After settling in at Nyati Safari Camp, the first afternoon in the park is often spent where the water is, because the swamps draw elephants, buffalo and birds through the day.

    Day 02Amboseli

    Elephants beneath Kilimanjaro

    Amboseli

Amboseli’s great herds are the reason to come, and a full day lets you spend time with them rather than simply count them. Whether Kilimanjaro shows itself on a given day depends on the weather, so it is worth looking south whenever the cloud lifts. During the day the drives move between the open plains, the thorny bushland and the swamps, and Observation Hill, known locally as Nomatior, offers a panoramic view across the park that shows how these habitats fit together.

    Day 03Amboseli

Birds of the swamps, then Nairobi

    Amboseli → Nairobi

Amboseli is one of Kenya’s Important Bird Areas, with more than 400 species recorded, among them some 40 birds of prey, and a final morning drive, where time allows, is a good time to look for them around the swamps and marshes, where the Amboseli Lake basin can also attract flamingos. After a last look at the plains the Land Cruiser heads back towards Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon or early evening with the park’s elephants and birds fresh in the memory.
