Day by day
Your itinerary, day by day.
Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi
The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

01Day 01Amboseli
South to Amboseli
Nairobi → Amboseli
The safari starts by heading south-east from Nairobi to Amboseli in the 4×4 Land Cruiser, through Emali to Iremito Gate or through Namanga to Meshanani Gate, the two main approaches Kenya Wildlife Service lists. Arriving at the lodge, perhaps in time for an afternoon drive, the first sight of the park is often its elephants, moving across open plains towards the swamps. When the weather is clear, Kilimanjaro rises across the border, the backdrop to the park’s elephant encounters.

02Day 02Amboseli
A day in Amboseli
Amboseli
The full day in Amboseli lets you settle in among its herds. Gazetted in 1974, the park is one of Kenya’s Important Bird Areas, with over 400 species including about 40 birds of prey. Drives can move between the open grass plains, the acacia woodland, the thorny bushland and the swamps, each with its own wildlife, and Observation Hill, Nomatior, gives a panoramic view and a story linked to the Ndorobo community.
A long travelling day takes the safari from the plains of the south up into the Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha. The change is complete: from dust and swamps to a freshwater lake fringed with papyrus, where hippos graze the shore and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute runs a research station. After a long day on the road, the lake shore is a restful place to arrive.

04Day 04Lake Naivasha · Maasai Mara
Naivasha to the Maasai Mara
Lake Naivasha → Maasai Mara
The morning by Lake Naivasha shows the lake at its quietest, before the drive south-west to the Maasai Mara. Arriving at the Mara lodge, an afternoon game drive, where time allows, opens the last chapter of the safari, with two nights in the reserve still ahead. After the swamps of Amboseli and the fresh water of Naivasha, the Mara’s grassland is the third landscape of the journey, and the one many visitors see as the heart of a Kenya safari.

05Day 05Maasai Mara
The Mara at its fullest
Maasai Mara
A full day on the Mara plains follows whichever season you travel in. In the migration months the Mara Conservancy counts around 1.2 million wildebeest moving with zebra, eland and Thomson’s gazelle, columns of them shifting across valleys and hills. Outside those months, elephants, giraffes, lion prides and topi make the reserve just as absorbing. The day is planned around recent sightings, with time to linger where the action is.

06Day 06Maasai Mara
Last drive and the return to Nairobi
Maasai Mara → Nairobi
The final morning in the Mara is a chance for a last game drive in the early light before the road back to Nairobi. The safari has travelled from the elephant plains below Kilimanjaro to the Rift Valley and on to the Mara’s grassland, three of Kenya’s most distinctive landscapes. By evening the Land Cruiser is back in Nairobi; the drop-off point is agreed in your quotation, so that onward flights can be planned around it.
