Your itinerary, day by day.

Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi

The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

    Day 01Samburu

    Nairobi to Samburu

    Nairobi → Samburu

The 4×4 Land Cruiser drives north from Nairobi through central Kenya to Samburu National Reserve, on the northern bank of the Ewaso Nyiro. The reserve is managed by the County Government of Samburu, and its main entrance, Archer’s Gate, is off the Marsabit highway near Archer’s Post. Where arrival time allows, an afternoon drive along the palm-fringed river introduces the reserve and its elephants.

    Day 02Samburu

The Samburu Five and their neighbours

    Samburu

A full day in Samburu is the chance to look for the Samburu Five, the northern species that give the reserve its identity. Beyond those five, the County Government of Samburu records about 50 species of larger mammals, including lion, leopard and cheetah, greater and lesser kudu, and a prolific birdlife. The landscape adds to the interest, with rocky outcrops, grassland and acacias, and the river at the centre of everything.

    Day 03Samburu · Ol Pejeta

    Samburu to Ol Pejeta

    Samburu → Ol Pejeta

The journey turns south to Laikipia and Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which describes itself as the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. Founded in 2004 on a former cattle ranch, it is one of five conservancies in Africa on the IUCN Green List, and its smart fencing is designed to let migratory wildlife move freely. Where time allows, an afternoon drive on the conservancy follows.

Day 04Ol Pejeta · Lake Nakuru

    Northern white rhinos, then Nakuru

    Ol Pejeta → Lake Nakuru

Ol Pejeta is where the last two northern white rhinos in the world live, alongside more than 165 critically endangered black rhinos, and a morning here is a rare chance to understand what is at stake in rhino conservation. Chimpanzees in the conservancy’s care make it the only place in Kenya to see them. Then the safari heads west to Lake Nakuru, where our catalogue names Buraha Zenoni for the night.

Day 05Lake Nakuru · Maasai Mara

    Lake Nakuru to the Mara

    Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara

Where time allows, an early drive in Lake Nakuru National Park adds a third rhino stronghold to the journey, with both black and white rhinos inside the park’s fence, before the long transfer to the Maasai Mara. The Land Cruiser crosses from the Rift Valley to the grassland of the reserve, arriving at the lodge later in the day. After the dry north and the Laikipia plateau, the Mara’s open plains make a fitting final stop.

    Day 06Maasai Mara

    The Mara’s famous plains

    Maasai Mara

The full day in the Mara is the safari’s finale. Depending on the month, the reserve may be home to the migration, which the Mara Conservancy follows from the Sand River towards Look-Out Hill and down to the Mara River, or to its resident wildlife. Either way, the open grassland makes for wonderful viewing, and the Conservancy’s community scouts on the Siria Escarpment are a reminder of the people who protect it.

    Day 07Maasai Mara

    Mara to Nairobi

    Maasai Mara → Nairobi

Where time allows, an early drive gives a final look at the Mara before the return to Nairobi. This week has covered a remarkable range of conservation stories, from the county-run reserve of Samburu to Ol Pejeta’s rhinos and chimpanzees, the fenced sanctuary of Lake Nakuru and the Conservancy-managed Mara Triangle. The safari ends in the capital, with the drop-off point set out in your quotation. Each stop is looked after by a different kind of body: a county government, a private conservancy, Kenya Wildlife Service and the Mara Conservancy.
