Starts in Arusha · finishes in Arusha

The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

    Day 01Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara at the foot of the escarpment

    Arusha → Lake Manyara

The safari begins in Arusha with the drive to Lake Manyara National Park, close to Mto wa Mbu on the northern circuit. The park is small but striking, with groundwater forest at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment giving way to the shores of a soda lake. A game drive looks for the lions known to rest in the trees, along with blue monkeys, bushbuck and lesser flamingos, and the park welcomes photography, so there is time to stop for pictures.

    Day 02Serengeti

Over the highlands to the Serengeti plains

    Lake Manyara → Serengeti

Today the Land Cruiser crosses the highlands to the Serengeti. TANAPA calls the park home to more than a million and a half migrating wildebeest, moving with zebra and followed by the predators that depend on them. Where the herds are depends on the season, and in any month the park holds lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos. A game drive in the afternoon leads on to the night’s lodge in the park.

    Day 03Serengeti · Ngorongoro

    Serengeti morning, crater evening

    Serengeti → Ngorongoro

An early drive in the Serengeti is the best chance of seeing its predators at their most active, and of birds among the more than 500 species the park records. Then the journey returns towards Ngorongoro, where lodges sit on and near the crater rim, and where views down into the caldera give a first sense of its scale. The NCAA describes the crater as roughly 20 kilometres across and about 610 metres deep, and tomorrow is spent on its floor.

    Day 04Ngorongoro

Crater floor and the road to Arusha

    Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

The last day is spent on the crater floor, where the NCAA notes that animals are present throughout the year, among them elephants, buffalo, rhinos, lions and leopards. Because only four-wheel-drive vehicles may enter, the Land Cruiser is well suited to the descent. After the game drive, the journey climbs out of the crater and returns to Arusha. Four days have covered a soda-lake forest, the Serengeti plains and the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera.
