Your itinerary, day by day.

Starts in Arusha · finishes in Arusha

The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

    Day 01Tarangire

    Arusha to Tarangire

    Arusha → Tarangire

From Arusha the 4×4 Land Cruiser follows the good tarmac road via Makuyuni and Minjingu that TANAPA describes as the route to Tarangire, with graded park roads for the final approach. Tarangire is elephant country: TANAPA counts more than 3,000 here, Tanzania’s densest population, and in the dry months of June to October they are joined by large herds of wildebeest, zebra and buffalo along the Tarangire River. Giant baobabs, some of them centuries old, rise above the savannah.

    Day 02Ngorongoro

    Down into the Ngorongoro Crater

    Tarangire → Ngorongoro Crater

Today the journey reaches the Ngorongoro Crater, which the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority describes as the world’s largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater floor supports more than 25,000 animals, among them elephants, buffalo, rhinos, lions and leopards, which is why many people choose it as the place to look for the Big Five. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles may enter, and walking is not allowed on the crater floor, so the day is spent on game drives among its grassland, swamps and woodland.

    Day 03Serengeti

    Into the Serengeti

    Ngorongoro → Serengeti

From the crater highlands the road descends to the Serengeti, the park that Tanzania National Parks calls home to the world’s last remaining large-mammal migration: more than a million and a half wildebeest moving with zebra and followed by predators. Where the herds are depends on the season and on the rain, so the drive is chosen accordingly. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti holds lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos, and more than 500 bird species.

    Day 04Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara and the road to Arusha

Serengeti → Lake Manyara → Arusha

The final day ends at Lake Manyara, a compact park at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment, just south of Mto wa Mbu. TANAPA describes groundwater forest of mahogany and fig sheltering blue monkeys and bushbuck, lesser flamingos feeding on the soda lake and lions known for resting in the branches, though no sighting can be promised. After a drive from the forest to the lake shore, the Land Cruiser returns to Arusha on the tarmac road.
