Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi

The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

    Day 01Maasai Mara

    To the Mara in comfort

    Nairobi → Maasai Mara

The safari begins with the drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara in the 4×4 Land Cruiser, where a lodge is the base for the first two nights. Where arrival time allows, an afternoon game drive is the first of several, and the reserve rarely disappoints on a first outing: its open grassland makes it easy to spot elephants, giraffes and grazing herds, and lions are often found resting in the shade during the warm part of the day.

    Day 02Maasai Mara

    The migration country

    Maasai Mara

This full day in the reserve follows the season. If you travel between June or July and November, the Mara Conservancy’s migration window, the plains may be filled with wildebeest, zebra, eland and Thomson’s gazelle, and the guide may head towards the Mara River in case the herds gather to cross. In other months, the day is spent with the reserve’s residents, and the Conservancy’s description of the Mara before the migration, with lions, elephants and topi, is a fair picture of what to expect.

Day 03Maasai Mara · Lake Nakuru

    North-east to Lake Nakuru

    Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru

Leaving the Mara, the journey heads into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. This is one of three lakes listed together as the Kenya Lake System World Heritage Site, along with Bogoria, which comes tomorrow, and Elementaita. The park’s rhinos are its great draw, black and white, and an afternoon drive may give a first look before the night at a lodge, with a full morning of lake country to follow.

Day 04Lake Nakuru · Lake Bogoria

Steam and flamingos at Lake Bogoria

    Lake Nakuru → Lake Bogoria

North of Nakuru, Lake Bogoria National Reserve protects an alkaline lake ringed by hot springs, geysers and the Rift Valley escarpment. The reserve’s management plan records more than a million and a half lesser flamingos at times, though recent rises in the lake have changed their feeding habitat, and sightings vary. The hot springs reach close to boiling point, so keep to the viewing areas. The reserve is also home to the greater kudu, and its swamps, such as Loboi, are rich in birds.

Day 05Lake Bogoria · Lake Naivasha

    South to Lake Naivasha

    Lake Bogoria → Lake Naivasha

From Bogoria’s alkaline water the journey travels south to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake, the third of the trip and the most different in character. The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, which runs a research station on its shore, studies the lake’s fisheries of largemouth bass and tilapia, and the effect of the flower farms that dominate the catchment. Hippos graze the lakeside grassland, and the night is spent at a lodge by the lake.

    Day 06Lake Naivasha

    Naivasha to Nairobi

    Lake Naivasha → Nairobi

The last morning is spent by Lake Naivasha before the short drive back to Nairobi. Mount Longonot, a young volcano, stands on the Nairobi–Nakuru highway near the lake, and Hell’s Gate, with its cliffs and gorges, lies along Moi South Lake Road, both reminders of how volcanic the Rift Valley is. The safari ends in the capital, after six days that combined the Mara with three very different lakes: one fenced for rhinos, one steaming with hot springs and one of fresh water.
