The Machame route starts at Machame Gate, one of the main gates onto Kilimanjaro listed by Tanzania National Parks. Unlike the Marangu route, which uses mountain huts, Machame climbers sleep in designated tented camps run by licensed operators, and the descent from the mountain is by Mweka Gate.
Six days falls within the five to eight days TANAPA gives for reaching Kibo, the 5,895-metre summit that carries snow all year despite lying close to the equator. TANAPA’s advice is to choose an itinerary with acclimatisation days and to ascend slowly, and every climb must be led by a licensed operator.
