Central Serengeti

Camping within the park landscape.

TANAPA identifies public camping in the Seronera area of central Serengeti. The park authority manages public campsites separately from permanent tented lodges and seasonal camps. The communal building in the supplied photograph helps explain that distinction: a public camping stay is not a furnished lodge room.

Prepare for camping

Agree the equipment before departure.

TANAPA’s accommodation guidance says guests bring tents and camping equipment to public campsites. On an organised safari, ask exactly what the operator supplies: tent, sleeping mat or bed, sleeping bag, lighting, meals and water. Ask about the current toilet and washing arrangements at the specific site allocated to your trip.

Days in the Serengeti

Plan drives around the season.

A central base is not a promise of a migration river crossing. The herds move across a much larger landscape, so choose your dates and route for the experience you want. Camping also asks more of travellers than a hotel stay: discuss comfort, weather, equipment and the campsite’s wildlife-safety instructions before choosing it.

Getting there

Arusha, the road and the airstrip.

Tanzania National Parks names Arusha as the most common starting point for the Serengeti, with regular flights to Seronera airstrip in the heart of the park, and describes the road journey from Arusha as long but scenic. It advises always travelling with a guide or tour operator, and its guides must be certified.
