Why visit Mikumi

Easy-to-reach big game.

Mikumi sits on the A7 highway, which makes it one of Tanzania’s most accessible parks and, in TANAPA’s words, a perfect weekend safari from Dar es Salaam. Its wide savannahs and seasonal pans draw elephants, lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and hippos, often close to the main circuit, and its reliable wildlife viewing has made it a favourite with first-time and repeat visitors alike.

It is part of the greater Selous–Niassa ecosystem, and its corridors link wildlife across southern Tanzania. TANAPA also describes Mikumi as a gateway to Ruaha and Nyerere, which is why it often features on longer southern journeys. Walking safaris are offered in designated areas, accompanied by an authorised ranger or guide.

Landscapes & wildlife

Floodplain and pans.

The Mkata floodplain is prime ground for elephants, lions and buffalo, with big skies and easy viewing, while the acacia woodland and seasonal pans host rollers, bee-eaters, hornbills, eagles and seasonal waterbirds. Wildlife regularly crosses near the roads and viewing loops, so TANAPA asks drivers to go slowly and keep a safe distance, and never to approach hippo pools or elephant herds on foot.

When to visit

When to visit Mikumi.

The dry season, June to October, concentrates wildlife on the Mkata floodplain and is the best time for game viewing. The green season brings dramatic skies and great birding, with seasonal waterbirds on the pans. Peak periods book up quickly, and TANAPA advises confirming availability and transfer arrangements in advance. In tsetse areas, avoid bright or blue clothing and keep windows closed near baboons.
