Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi

The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

Arriving in the Mara with a camera

    Nairobi → Maasai Mara

The 4×4 Land Cruiser carries you from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara, aiming to arrive in time for an afternoon drive. For photographers, the Mara offers wide open grassland, uncluttered horizons and animals that are often in plain view. The rules matter from the first drive: in the reserve you may leave the vehicle only at designated points, and standing on the roof or sitting in the window to photograph is not allowed.

    Day 02Maasai Mara

    First light and last light

    Maasai Mara

Photographers often plan a Mara day around the light, with long drives at the start and end of the day when the sun is low, and a rest in the middle when it is harsh. The Mara Conservancy’s picture of the reserve before the herds arrive, red oat grass moving in the wind, a topi on a termite mound and lions waiting out the heat beneath the acacias, reads almost like a list of the reserve’s classic images. A full day in the reserve leaves room for both the early and the late light.

    Herds, rivers and patience

    Maasai Mara

In migration season, from around June or July to November, the Mara River can be the most dramatic place in the reserve, but the Conservancy’s advice is that crossings are frequent yet hard to predict, and that the herds themselves are the spectacle. For photographers that means patience, and good manners: keep quiet, keep back from the crossing point and never block moving herds, because pushing them can lead to crossings at unsafe banks and the deaths of hundreds of animals.

    Day 04Maasai Mara

A final morning shoot, then Nairobi

    Maasai Mara → Nairobi

The last morning is another chance to photograph the Mara in early light, when animals are active and the grassland glows, before the drive back to Nairobi. Four days give time to revisit the places that worked best, try again with subjects that eluded you, and spend whole sessions with one pride or herd. By the end of the trip, most photographers will have a sense of the reserve’s rhythm that a shorter visit cannot give.
