Starts in Nairobi · finishes in Nairobi

The route, days and named stays are as planned. What is included at each stop, from food, park fees and drinking water to room types, permits and border arrangements, and any camp or lodge not named here, is set out in your written quotation. Game drives on travel days depend on arrival and departure times, timings can change with road and park conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Photographs illustrate each day’s destination; they are not pictures of a particular departure.

    Day 01Lake Naivasha

    Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

    Nairobi → Lake Naivasha

This lodge safari heads north-west from Nairobi into the Rift Valley, reaching Lake Naivasha in the 4×4 Land Cruiser on the first day. Naivasha is fresh water, a Ramsar-designated wetland known for exceptional biodiversity, and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute counts its papyrus fringes and hippo-grazed lakeside grassland as internationally important. It is a gentle start to a journey that will travel through lakes, forest and dry northern country before it ends.

Day 02Lake Naivasha · Lake Nakuru

    To Lake Nakuru

    Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru

A short drive north-west along the floor of the Rift Valley brings the safari to Lake Nakuru, where Buraha Zenoni, the property named in our catalogue, is the base for the night. Lake Nakuru National Park is known above all for its rhinos, black and white, protected inside the park’s electric fence, and for the waterbirds that first earned the lake its protection. A game drive here moves from the lake shore through grassland and acacia woodland to the escarpments above.

Day 03Lake Nakuru · Lake Bogoria · Lake Baringo

Bogoria’s hot springs and Lake Baringo

Lake Nakuru → Lake Bogoria → Lake Baringo

From Nakuru, the road north towards Marigat leads to Lake Bogoria National Reserve, whose main approach reaches Loboi Gate and the reserve headquarters. Bogoria is Kenya’s deepest alkaline lake, where hot springs and geysers steam along the shore at Loburu and Chemurkeu, and the reserve is the centre of religious and cultural life for the Endorois community. A little further north lies Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake whose fisheries support its lakeshore communities.

    Day 04Lake Baringo · Aberdares

    Up into the Aberdares

Lake Baringo → The Ark, Aberdares

Leaving the Rift Valley floor, the journey climbs south-east to the Aberdares, a cool, misty volcanic range on the eastern wall of the Rift, where the title names The Ark for a night. Kenya Wildlife Service describes thick montane forest, open moorland, deep ravines and waterfalls, with elephants and buffalo emerging from the trees. Temperatures drop quickly at night in the highlands, so warm clothing is worth having to hand.

    Day 05Aberdares · Samburu

From the forest to the dry north

    Aberdares → Samburu

The Aberdares are full of history: it was at Treetops in February 1952 that Princess Elizabeth learned she had become Queen, and a great fig tree used as a “post office” by Mau Mau fighters during the struggle for independence still stands. Leaving the highlands, the journey continues north to Samburu National Reserve, a complete change of scene, where doum palms line the Ewaso Nyiro and the country is hot and dry.

    Day 06Samburu

    Samburu’s northern wildlife

    Samburu

A full day of drives in Samburu is the chance to find the animals of the north, the Samburu Five: Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and Grevy’s zebra. The reserve is especially known for its elephants, which gather along the river, and the County Government of Samburu ranks its wildlife variety and density among the highest in the country. Across the Ewaso Nyiro to the south, Buffalo Springs National Reserve continues the same landscape.

    Day 07Samburu

    South to Nairobi

    Samburu → Nairobi

There may be time for an early drive before leaving Samburu, a good hour for the birds, from hornbills and weavers to birds of prey. The journey back to Nairobi then heads south through central Kenya, ending a week that has been unusually varied: a freshwater lake, a rhino sanctuary, hot springs and geysers, a highland forest and the dry country of the north, without a single day spent on the familiar Mara circuit.
